Endless

A pavillion with Endless possibilities

Endless is a pavilion about the representation of the three campuses of the TU Delft, University of Kassel and University of Tennessee. The general question is: What are these universities about and how can they show that to the world? This design emerged from an interesting combination of both “common physical” and complex 3D digital techniques.

A pavillion that learns… Like every student this pavillion learns. It learns from the students that visit it. Each visitor has the possibility to upload his or her architectural projects into the pavillion. Thereby accumulating all kinds of projects from the universities. This will be the actual representation, not a simple story from the dean etc, but projects from students. All of this is collected in an endless loop; the ribbon. This ribbon is the heart of the pavillion, everything relies on it. Not only information but also shape, structure etc.

During the process there was a constant switching between physical and digital models, they complemented eachother.
A summary: The initial idea of the ribbon was formed using simple paper strips which where bended. From this an interpetation in a virtual model was made. This model was taken back to simple paper strips and further refined. This model then was digitized and refined. The idea of the skin was formed using balloons in the physical model, but this proofed to be too complex to digitize, therefore animation techniques where used to create the skin in the virtual model.

The final pavillion is lifted 1 meter above the ground to complete the lightness of the whole design. The whole building needs to be tranportable, this building allows a complete breakdown into parts which fit in one large sea-container.
